"(...) preach the end of the world as a way of making us give up on our own dreams. And my provocation about postponing the end of the world is precisely to be able to tell one more story. If we can do that, we'll be postponing the end of the world. "

- Ailton Krenak on "Ideas to postpone the end of the world"

What's your verse to postpone the end of the world?

The 2024 edition of the Dates competition seeks to reflect on our ecological and political disarray and how we can once again dream of the continuity of humanity through poetry. Faced with a reality that seems to end every day, we need to enrich our subjectivities so that they don't become another exhausted resource.

We invite poets from all over the country to reframe our relationship with our rivers, forests, cities and landscapes; to understand what our role is as citizens, and to sow the seeds of a new society in harmony with the earth. It is with poetry that we can nurture new paths and finally rise up and breathe again, with an eye on a clear and possible horizon.

Inspired by a quote from Ailton Krenak, the 2023 edition of the Dates competition seeks to reflect on the recovery of the ancestry of diverse cultures, and to dream of a better future for us all.

"The rivers, these beings who have always inhabited the worlds in different forms, are the ones who suggest to me that, if there is a future to be considered, that future is
ancestral, because it was already here."
- Ailton Krenak in "Ancestral Future"

The theme "The future is ancestral" invites poets from all over the country to reflect on the importance of reconnecting with our cultural and ancestral legacies. As we navigate the uncertain waters of the future, looking back at the wisdom and traditions that our ancestors have bequeathed to us becomes essential.

This journey of self-discovery allows us to understand not only where we come from, but also who we are and where we want to go as a society. By recovering our roots, we find a solid foundation for building a more conscious, inclusive and harmonious future, both for ourselves and for generations to come.
